By REX ZIMMERMAN

South Barber’s basketball teams both picked up a pair of wins last week to head into the holiday break with 5-2 records.

The Lady Chieftains topped South Haven 56-28 and Argonia 56-26, while the boys rolled over South Haven 67-35 then nipped Argonia 60-55.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday, January 5, at home against South Central.

Pressure Defense

Lady Chieftain coach Steve Roberts and his team used outstanding defense to jump out to a 34-17 halftime lead over South Haven on their way to a 28 point win.

Madison Polson had a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the attack with Bailey Roberts adding 9 points and Morgan Polson 6 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals. Nicole Blick also scored 6 points to go with 5 rebounds and 4 assists, and Idallis Shaffer had 6 points. Sabrina Hughbanks with 5 and Anna Perez with 2 points rounded out the scoring.

A basket by Grant Cantrell tied the game at 51-all with three minutes left to play, and two buckets by Neal Gugelmeyer – one of them a 3-pointer, gave the Chieftains a 56-53 lead in the final two minutes.

Spencer Kimmell nailed a 2-pointer with 30 seconds left then Trae Rathgeber sank two free throws with just 11 seconds left to pull out the 60-55 win. South Barber outscored Argonia 20-8 in the final quarter of play.
