Hughbanks Sisters Team Up for Trip to State Tennis

The South Barber Lady Chieftain doubles team of Sabrina and Savannah Hughbanks went 3-1 at last weekend’s 3-2-1A Regional Tennis Tournament to finish in third place overall and earn a trip to this weekend’s State Tennis Championships in Wichita.

Sabrina, a senior, and Savannah, a sophomore, will take a 24-7 record to State, which will be played Friday and Saturday, October 14-15, at the Riverside Tennis Complex, 551 Nims Street, in Wichita.

The doubles duo opened play with a win over Martin/Dale of South Central in straight sets by scores of 6-1, 6-0. Next, they faced LeClear/Howard of Minneola and won handily by scores of 6-1, 6-0.

In semifinal play, the Hughbanks faced May/Osner of Conway Springs and won the first set 6-4. Conway Springs won the next set 7-6 after a 7-3 tiebreaker, and the final set also went to a tiebreaker with Conway Springs again getting the 7-6 win with the 7-3 tiebreaker win.

That put South Barber in the third place match, where they rolled over Fox/Kellenberger of Ashland 6-1, 6-3.

Koch/Eberkamp of Conway Springs took top honors in doubles followed by May/Osner in second.

The second South Barber doubles team of Kathnee Martin and Takira Blick lost their opening match 6-0, 7-6 after narrowly losing a 7-2 tiebreaker in the second set.

In singles competition, Sabrina Bellar of Conway Springs won top honors followed by Sydney Roe of Kingman and Maggie Mathes of Chaparral.

Taylor Pollock was knocked out of singles play by Roth of Kingman by set scores of 6-2, 6-2. South Barber’s other singles entry, Malayna McKitrick, fell in her first match 6-0, 6-0 to Endicott of Ashland.
